Don’t be surprised when you see the iconic vintage cars that define Cuba’s postcard charm serving as taxis on the streets. These shared taxis can accommodate up to five passengers on set routes, like a shuttle service. While private taxis are available, they tend to be pricier and may not necessarily be the cool classic cars you’ve seen online. During our excursion tour in Cuba, which was arranged for us through Carnival Cruise Line, our native tour guide informed us that the crime rate in the country is relatively low. While I cannot validate this statement without official reports, I must admit that before and after the five-hour tour, my mom and I felt safe while walking to the market and restaurants, as well as crossing the streets.

Although locals may approach tourists to sell their goods, we did not encounter any safety issues during the day or night on the island. Overall, we had a peaceful and secure experience in Cuba

Exploring Cuban Cuisine

Cuba is famous for its vibrant and flavorful cuisine, which is a unique blend of Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences.

From fine dining restaurants to street food stalls, Cuba has a diverse range of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets.

When it comes to dining in Cuba, you’ll come across both privately owned restaurants, known as “paradors,” and state-run establishments. During our stay, my mom and I tried out La Habana Vieja, a restaurant located within the Hoteles Habaguanex.

While the atmosphere and service were impressive, the food left something to be desired, with a rating of 2 out of 5 stars in our opinion. At $25 per plate for a three-course meal, it initially seemed like a good deal, but the dishes were overcooked.

However, the next morning we stumbled upon Restaurante Cafeteria and enjoyed a delicious breakfast, complete with authentic Cuban coffee that my mom couldn’t stop raving about. So, discovering great food in Cuba can be a hit or miss experience.
